Speculation about the couple’s status began in December, when Lipa was first seen wearing a diamond ring on the fourth finger of her left hand. With the singer now confirming the engagement, the romantic rumours were all but sealed during a picture-perfect moment beneath the Eiffel Tower during Couture Week in Paris.
Dua’s ring, believed to be an 18-carat yellow-gold band featuring a two-carat diamond and estimated to be worth around £30,000, exemplifies the new wave of bold engagement ring styles dominating the year.
According to London-based jeweller Kitty Fuller of Kitty Joyas, the move away from dainty claw-set solitaires toward thicker, more sculptural bands is intentional. “I think the replacement of fine bands and delicate claw settings with chunky engagement designs speaks to the shift in people seeking rings that feel both more contemporary and wearable,” Fuller told Vogue.
Fellow London jeweller and goldsmith Jessie Thomas agrees, noting the rise in popularity of chunky styles among those seeking pieces that reflect personal style and substance. “They feel more unique and make for a cool, wearable statement piece, yet remain timeless,” she explained.
The aesthetic may feel modern, but its roots stretch back centuries. Thomas points to the Victorian era as a historical reference, when gemstones were often embedded directly into the ring’s band rather than elevated on prongs. This “flush setting” technique not only created a sleek and smooth silhouette but also offered practical advantages.
“It’s a less showy way of setting a larger stone, making it more suitable for everyday wear,” Thomas added. “The design was, and continues to be, extremely appealing for its practicality and durability, with the flush setting protecting the gemstone from wear and tear.”
