McConnell’s Distillery, nestled in the heart of north Belfast, is preparing to host its very first wedding after an impressive debut year that attracted 20,000 visitors. The distillery, which opened its doors in the historic Crumlin Road Gaol last year, has brought whiskey distilling back to a city once known as the heart of the global industry.
In addition to producing enough new make spirit for 1.6 million bottles, McConnell’s Distillery has quickly become a major tourist destination. The site, now known as McConnell’s Distillery Brand Home, offers a unique mix of immersive whiskey tours, cultural events, gigs, creative showcases, and collaborations that have captured the attention of both locals and international visitors alike.
As the distillery looks to expand its offerings, it is now preparing for an exciting new venture—hosting weddings. The first event of this kind will mark a new chapter for McConnell’s, adding a unique twist to Belfast’s vibrant wedding scene.
McConnell’s Irish Whiskey, which is exported to over 45 global markets, has quickly gained a reputation not just for its product but for its ability to blend heritage with modern experiences. CEO John Kelly emphasized that the distillery represents more than just a place where whiskey is made. “This is a story about transformation, bringing new life and energy to a part of the city that holds deep historical significance—and creating something truly future-facing,” he said.
The distillery’s success in attracting visitors is a testament to the growing demand for authentic, immersive experiences. Gary Quate, tourism manager for food and drink at Tourism NI, praised the distillery’s ability to reclaim Belfast’s whiskey heritage. “The transformation of this historic building into a vibrant cultural and tourism destination is exactly the kind of experience today’s visitors are seeking,” Quate said.
With its combination of rich history, cultural offerings, and the allure of whiskey, McConnell’s Distillery is poised to become one of Belfast’s most sought-after venues for both weddings and tourism, enhancing the city’s competitive edge as a travel destination. The first wedding event is set to be the start of many more to come, marking the distillery’s continued growth and success.
