Why Weddings Are Shrinking

by Evelyn

Ballrooms are out, and backyard vows are in.

Across the United States, more couples are opting for smaller, more intimate weddings—often dubbed “micro weddings”—as they seek to reduce costs, minimize stress, and focus on meaningful connections with guests.

By the Numbers:

The average wedding guest count in the U.S. dropped to 131 in 2024, down from 184 in 2006, according to data from The Wedding Report. Meanwhile, the proportion of weddings hosting 50 or fewer guests has nearly doubled—from 10% in 2013 to 18% in 2023.

What’s Driving the Trend:

Experts say the motivation is largely financial. “While some couples simply prefer a low-key atmosphere, most are downsizing to save money,” said Shane McMurray, CEO of The Wedding Report. In fact, industry professionals estimate that micro weddings can cost more than 50% less than traditional ceremonies.

Smaller Weddings, Bigger Impact:

Couples are trading grand venues for courthouse ceremonies, backyard receptions, or dinners at cozy local restaurants. The result: more quality time with loved ones and flexibility to splurge on elements that matter most—whether that’s an open bar, a gourmet carving station, or a bespoke wedding outfit.

Cities such as Boston, Dallas, Portland (Oregon), and Richmond (Virginia) have seen a rise in boutique wedding chapels and curated elopement services, tailored to couples who prefer experiences over extravagance.

Financial Pressure on the Rise:

The shift comes amid growing economic concerns. With the average U.S. wedding now costing around $33,000, tariffs and inflation are prompting many couples to rethink their plans—or delay celebrations altogether. For some, trimming the guest list is the most effective way to stay on budget, as major wedding expenses—like catering, invitations, and venue rental—are typically priced per head.

A New Aesthetic:

Intimate doesn’t mean ordinary. Courthouse weddings and city hall ceremonies are becoming a cultural statement, especially among Gen Z. Pinterest has reported a surge in searches for terms like “city hall elopement” and “courthouse wedding dress ideas,” reflecting a growing appreciation for minimalist and meaningful celebrations.

The Bottom Line:

As wedding traditions evolve, couples are feeling empowered to celebrate in ways that reflect their values and realities. In this new era, there’s no pressure to invite your freshman-year roommate or fill a banquet hall—just a focus on authenticity, connection, and love.
