Seoul, South Korea — Tying the knot in South Korea is becoming increasingly expensive, with the average cost of wedding services now totaling 21.01 million won (approximately US$15,262), according to a new industry report released by the Korea Consumer Agency.

The findings, based on analysis of 5,000 wedding venue contracts across 370 locations and 1,814 package service deals—including photography, dress rentals, and makeup—highlight significant regional cost disparities, particularly in and around the capital.

Capital Costs Skyrocket in Gangnam

Seoul’s upscale Gangnam district topped the list with an average total wedding service cost of 34.09 million won, nearly double the national average. Meals Dominate Wedding Budgets

Meal costs accounted for the largest portion of wedding hall expenses. The median cost per guest was 58,000 won, underscoring how quickly costs can escalate with larger guest lists.

Seasonal Price Spikes and Long-Term Planning

The report identified April as the most expensive month for venue rentals, with average costs reaching 17.25 million won, followed by March, May, and June. The data also revealed that over half (55.3%) of couples reserved their wedding venues 12 to 18 months in advance, indicating the level of planning required amid a competitive market.

Weddings vs. Tech Spending

The growing financial burden of weddings comes as the South Korean government prepares to invest 480 billion won in artificial intelligence development in 2025, highlighting a contrast in public and private spending priorities amid shifting economic dynamics.

As the cost of wedding services continues to rise—particularly in urban centers—couples may increasingly weigh the benefits of traditional ceremonies against more affordable, alternative options.
