Hong Kong — A suspected abrupt closure of a wedding decoration company in Hong Kong has left hundreds of engaged couples scrambling, with reported losses exceeding HK$330,000 (US$42,000), according to the city’s consumer watchdog.
The company, Ps Wedding & Event Decoration, came under scrutiny on Wednesday after its office was found shuttered, its social media presence wiped, and all attempts to contact staff met with silence. The sudden disappearance has sparked concern among clients who had already paid deposits for upcoming wedding services.
Among the estimated 200 affected individuals is 27-year-old schoolteacher John Tsoi, who had hired the firm to decorate his wedding scheduled for December. Tsoi, like many others, has joined an online group to exchange information and seek support in the aftermath of the company’s apparent disappearance.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the number of victims in the chat group continued to grow, as more couples came forward with similar experiences.
The Consumer Council has urged affected customers to gather receipts, contracts, and any other related documentation to assist in potential recovery efforts or legal proceedings. Authorities have yet to confirm whether Ps Wedding & Event Decoration has officially ceased operations.
This incident underscores the risks associated with prepaid services in the wedding industry, especially in the absence of consumer protection mechanisms for sudden closures.
